Statistics reveal that around 12.1 million people have undergone cosmetic procedures in the year 2008 alone. These people have a wide range of social, personal, and psychological reasons to undergo cosmetic procedures. People undergoing cosmetic surgery do not necessarily have to be brave. They simply need to be sensible or stressed out with the demands placed on them at the workplace or in their personal life.
Cosmetic surgery is an absolute necessity for Hollywood stars. They are required to correct the shape of their nose or get a breast augmentation to look good, attract roles, enhance self-esteem, and build up a fan base. Since stars live in the limelight, they are faced with the almost impossible task of fitting into the norms set by the entertainment industry and fans. However, most Hollywood stars are sensible enough to take just as much cosmetic surgery as is required to enhance their careers. For instance, Jennifer Anniston expresses a desire to take Botox treatment to get rid of her wrinkles and look younger.
But Heidi Montag’s recent multiple cosmetic surgeries have shocked the medical world, fans, and co-workers. Medical experts are sure that the multiple cosmetic procedures that she has undergone in just one day, around five months back, could ultimately lead to a wide range of health problems. Dr. Brian S Glatt, the director of the Premier Plastic Surgery Center, said that Heidi’s breast implants are too much for her size and that their weight will cause spine problems in future. She might also not be able to breastfeed because the implants will squeeze and put pressure on the milk ducts. She might also have drooping breasts in the long run, Dr. Glatt said.
Heidi, however, is not alone in wanting to look better. A large number of good-looking young people in the age group of 18 – 23 opt for facial surgeries. They do so for a number of reasons such as insecurity, the desire to bask in the limelight, the fear of being ridiculed by peers, or just to fit into the standards of beauty set by the media and the cosmetic industry.
Dr. Steven Pearlman, a facial plastic surgeon, warns that, when plastic surgery is done at a very young age, it causes unwanted facial changes in the long run. Besides, cosmetic surgery is simply not the solution in case of young people who just hate their bodies. The problem has deep psychological roots that need to be solved at the psychologist’s clinic. A cosmetic surgeon can do nothing much to solve such a problem. He/she might alter the patient’s looks, but will never be able to alter the way a patient feels about him/herself.
However, many people approaching the cosmetic surgeon are sensible and simply want to look good. They just want to accentuate their best features and remove flaws if possible. Above all, they want to look like themselves at their best. They simply view cosmetic surgery as a tool to enhance self-confidence, further a career, or save a relationship.
