Technical Specifications for the "Perscription-Filling" Module

The next section shows which medication the patient is currently on, and provides an easy way to re-order the same prescription. It is estimated that most prescriptions at the clinic are of this type, so making this easy and simple would be ideal. That said, we also need to think of how to handle alterations to these prescriptions (i.e. changing the dosage or provider, etc).

Additionally, there is the new medication section where the name of the prescription may be entered as well as the dosage, route, frequency, duration, and indication. The quantity will be calculated automatically based on the availability of the desired dosage. This section leaves more to be figured out – we tried several different ways of calculating and inputting various combinations of medication dosages if the desired was not available, but did not settle on anything. However, if we do not allow for the mixing of manufacturers as suggested by Dr. Adler and Dr. Colbert, this problem should become simpler.

Finally, we have the Patient Assistance Inventory listed so that we can track when the patient has prescriptions available or is due for more.

The next screen should handle the dosage somehow, and then the system should also display the labels and the ability to print.

• How do we handle alterations to current meds? Do we “edit” the prescription, or just create a whole new one?
• How do we handle mixed orders? Dr. Colbert and Dr. Adler said we shouldn’t worry about mixing generic prescriptions from different manufacturers because that shouldn’t happen, but we do need to be able to handle half pills, etc.
